Tilden Township Police were made aware by a resident of another phone scam in the area.
The caller identified himself as Steve Martin and gave the phone number to return his call as (510) 423-5700, which was will also the number shown up on caller ID. He spoke with an obvious accent, maybe Middle or Far Eastern. He stated that ignoring the message would be a second attempt to avoid enforcement action by the US Treasury, a federal offense, and that the resident would have to appear before a grand jury or magistrate. He went on to say he’d like the resident to cooperate with him to help him help the resident. The message seemed like it was prerecorded since it repeated 3 times in each message and sounded identical.
Anyone legitimately needing to deal with the US Treasury can contact them at (202) 622-2000.
