Suspected bomb

August 27th, 2013

On 08/27/2013 at about 0951 hours, Tilden Township Police were dispatched to the Tilden Township Police Department to meet with a resident who had found an object in his driveway that he believed to be a bomb. The object was packaged in a zip lock bag with papers about joining the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The resident picked up the bag and drove it to the police station. He left the object in his vehicle.

Upon arrival, the responding officer evacuated the township building and blocked off the area with the assistance of a Berks County Sheriff’s Deputy K9 unit.  The Reading City Police Department Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene to evaluate the object. The object was determined to be cat litter in cylindrical shaped aluminum foil, which was most likely used to weigh the bags down so they did not blow away.

There were no threats or mentions of a bomb in the papers included in the bags. The bags were distributed in the driveways of about a dozen residences in the 2100 to 2400 blocks of Mountain Road, Tilden Township.

“Free” Medical Alert Scam

June 2013

“Free” Medical Alert Scam

The Pennsylvania SMP is hearing reports about a new medical alert scam targeting seniors nationwide. The unsolicited scam calls are pre-recorded messages stating that the senior qualifies for a free medical alert system or that someone has already paid for it. The message instructs seniors to press a number on their keypad to connect with a live person, or to press a different number to disconnect the call or be removed from their list.

If you receive a call like this, do not press any buttons, just hang up the phone. These calls are not from a legitimate company; they are attempts to scam seniors by enticing them with a free device and then asking for personal information.

Remember these red flags:

* Unsolicited calls: Be wary of calls that you did not ask to receive. Hang up the phone.

* Asking for personal information: Never give out personal, identifying information to callers, including your checking account, Social Security, or Medicare number.

* Offers involving anything “free”: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Medical alert systems are not free, and Medicare does not pay for them.

If you believe you may have been the victim of this scam, would like to report another health care scam, or see charges on your Medicare Summary Notice that you don’t recognize, call the SMP at CARIE. We’re here to help. A real person will answer your call. No buttons to push or menus to follow.

False Reports concerning robbery.

On 04/24/2013 & 04/25/2013, NESTER originally reported to police that she had been robbed in the Walmart parking lot in Tilden Township on 04/23/2013 at about 2230 hours. She had reported that a male and a female had approached her parked vehicle and demanded her money. She had reported that the male threatened her with harm if she did not comply and that he had something shaped like a gun under his shirt. She reported that she gave her purse to the male. She also advised that her small child had been in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the robbery.

NESTER provided a lengthy written statement detailing the robbery.

A copy of the CCTV surveillance video was obtained from Walmart for the night of the alleged robbery. Although NESTER and her vehicle appeared on the video, there was no video evidence indicating that a robbery had occurred nor anyone approaching NESTER. The video showed her leaving the parking lot safely in her vehicle.

NESTER initially cooperated in the investigation until she was shown the video. She then refused to cooperate any further or offer any explanation.

On 05/31/2013, Tilden Township Police filed misdemeanor charges against NESTER for False Reports to Law Enforcement Authorities and Unsworn Falsification to Authorities.
